Should President Trump be named President for life? In 2018 the ruling Communist Party in China announced it was eliminating the two-term limit for the presidency, paving the way for President Xi Jinping to serve indefinitely. Shortly thereafter the United States President Trump praised the Chinese President. “He’s now president for life, president for life. And he’s great,” Trump said, according to the audio of excerpts of Trump’s remarks at a closed-door fundraiser in Florida. “And look, he was able to do that. I think it’s great. Maybe we’ll have to give that a shot someday,” Trump said to cheers and applause from supporters.
The phrase “President for Life” is not new to human civilization, it is a title assumed by or granted to some leaders to remove their term limit irrevocably as a way of removing future challenges to their authority and legitimacy. The title sometimes confers on the holder the right to nominate or appoint a successor.
Some people will point to President Trump’s hardline policies and booming inherited economy as evidence that Trump would make a good candidate to be President for Life. Other people will say that our fundamental democratic principles are in complete opposition to an idea like President for Life and that President Trump would be a terrible choice for that role. It should be noted that President Trump has seemingly floated the idea of being president for life or at a minimum president for more than two terms if we were able to be elected of late. He is constantly joking that he should be president for more than eight years.
Do you think this seems like a good idea for the United States? Would President Trump be a good President for Life? We want to know what you think. Vote now and make your voice heard.
