Sports and politics have combined many times over the years. Whether it was Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised fists at the medal ceremony of the 1968 Olympics or the anti-war activism of Muhammed Ali in the 60s and 70s sports and politics seemed to be intertwined. Perhaps it’s because so many of us look to athletes as role models and their voice means so much that we are so divided by it.
The most recent collision of sports and politics is athletes kneeling during the national anthem to peacefully protest social justice and bias of police against minorities and people of color. Some say this is disrespectful to the flag and to those who so bravely fought for our freedom and should not be allowed. Others say this is their right and is exactly why our soldiers fight so that we can have the freedom to peacefully protest and show our opinions. Many people have boycotted the NFL as a result of those who have taken a knee. Where do you stand?
Do you support the protest? Vote Yes. Are you against the protests? Vote No. And of course, if you prefer not to answer this hotly contested issue you can select Prefer not to answer.
